‘Cesca and Geoffrey advised WE BUMS regulars at the October WE BUMS that they’d be taking a beak for the rest of 2017. The decision was made after HOPE St Café booked another event on our second Friday. The Café is renovating through December.

There will be no WE BUMS in January as it is New Years Day, so we will be well into 2018 before BUMS have another jam at West End.

Thank you to ‘Cesca, Geoff and their crew for their enthusiasm and energy in running WE BUMS. Coming up with fresh themes and songs every month makes WE BUMS a truly unique experience in our jam agenda.

Stay tuned about plans for next year!

Ukuleles as well as fiddles, mandolins, tin whistles, guitars and a concertina are all welcome at Uke Plays Irish!

Join Peter McMeel and Brendan Williams every Thursday to bring a bit of the Irish to Toowong Bowls Club. Peter shares with us how the group is travelling.

Uke Plays Irish meet weekly Thursdays at Toowong Bowls Club.

On the first night about 25 people came right on time. I was surprised at the depth of people’s enjoyment and participation. Also surprising was the breadth of experience, talent and commitment. This group will flourish as a result of a committed core of highly experienced musicians who did say they will support this event throughout it’s life.

The singing was beautiful and filled the club wonderfully. Many people had ukuleles tuned in D*. There were 3 fiddles, mandolins, tin whistles, guitars and a concertina.

The playing on the second night started to sound magical as many people hit their stride with some of the basic techniques for supporting the melodies with chordal progressions. Simple two and three chord songs were repeatedly used to enable musicians to learn their musical structure and then anticipate the chord changes. This quickly evolved over the second night in a very pleasant way.

The Uke Plays Irish Sessions already sound wonderful with the club space resounding with beautiful music.

VENUE: Toowong Bowls Club, 59 Gailey Road, Taringa QLD 4068
TIME: Every Thursday night 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm. The session extends into “All Instruments” at around 6:30 pm and continues till around 8 pm
BRING: Ukes tuned in D for Celtic.

If you like to have a craic check out this post for more info https://www.brisbaneukulele.com/ukulele-plays-irish/

Check out more pics from the night on Facebook .

* Points on Tuning
The ukulele will be tuned up one whole step from C to D. GCEA becomes ADF#B.
D tuning can be high or low on string 4, in the same way as C. High tuning produces a wonderfully sweet and addictive harp like sound. Low tuning will extend the melodic range of the instrument a very handy amount, because ukuleles otherwise have quite a limited range. Watch out! God forbid, you may eventually wish to have a ukulele specially preserved in each tuning!

BUMS celebrated their 10th birthday at Coorparoo on Wednesday 3 May 2017.

Over 200 ukers joined us for a star-studded, fun-filled evening!

The jam sets were led  Anything Goes, David Hethorn, Free Range chUKES, Michael Willimott, NUMB BUMS, several of the original Performing BUMS and The CAGE.

The lucky winner of the long-awaited raffle draw for the coverted Kanile’a ‘Ukulele Tenor Uke was Lyn Barron.

President Ian Phillips waited until NUMB BUMS took the stage, and announced our 2017 life members.

Congratulations Joann Kunde and Chrissy Heinrich. And thank you for you dedication, enthusiasm, creative energy and hard work. BUMS wouldn’t be the same without you.

Thank you very much to Kanile’a ‘Ukulele for generously donating the prize for our 10th Birthday raffle.

And it was fantastic to see several of the original Performing BUMS returned to lead a set.

And of course, there was CAKE!

Thank you to our ever effervescent Media Manager, Jo Kunde, for masterminding the 10th birthday celebration. It was a fantastic jam.

Due to unforseen circumstances, the Paper Moon Music Jam will be closed until further notice.

We would like to thank Bec, Blair, Gosia and Erin, and everyone else who came to lend a hand or play along for making Paper Moon possible.

And a very big thank you to Jody from Paper Moon for hosting the jam.

With any luck our contemporary music jam for the young and young at heart will re-emerge, reinvigorated at another time and place.

If you would like to volunteer a venue, or volunteer to be rostered to lead a contemporary music jam, please contact Keryn at gigmeister@brisbaneukulele.com
