The next cab off the rank in our jam feature series is … Toowong Third Tuesday Ukulele Strummers (TuTus) Jam!

Sshh! Not many people know this secret. This jam is tucked away at picturesque West Toowong Bowls Club hideaway (a completely different venue from that of the Toowong Day-time Jam).

A ukulele group began meeting at the West Toowong Bowls Club as far back as 2012 or 2013 when a group of choir members decided to learn ukulele to accompany their singing. From 2014 the First Monday Ukulele Club (FMUC) at West Toowong was led by Judy Haines and Max Borchardt. In 2016, the group began meeting on Tuesdays, and became known as the Toowong Third Tuesday Ukulele Strummers (or TuTus for short). TuTus is now an official BUMS Inc jam venue.

It’s a small relaxed jam with troppo ambience, run on the bowls club verandah by our illustrious BUMS President, Max Borchardt. The final meet-up for TuTus in 2018 was on 20 November, and a write-up of this jam is the final newsletter review in 2018.

TuTus Jam on the verandah, West Toowong Bowls Club, Nov 2018

Salli struts her stuff, TuTus, Nov 2018

About a dozen people came to the November jam and that’s about the usual number. Helping Max was Salli on ubass.

We started with lots of old favourites including: “And Then I Kissed Her” – The Beach Boys, “Oh Boy” – Buddy Holly, and “Lord Won’t You Buy Me a Mercedes Benz” – Janis Joplin, where one brave soul, I think it was Noel, had a go at replicating Janice’s laugh at the end.

By this time we were warmed up. We sang the Creedence Clearwater Revival song “Down on the Corner” from their album “Willy and the Poor Boys” which sparked a debate about the meaning of the word ‘Kalamazoo’ in the song:

“Rooster hits the washboard and people just got to smile
Blinky thumps the gut bass and solos for a while
Poorboy twangs the rhythm out on his kalamazoo
And Willy goes into a dance and doubles on kazoo“

Did you know? The Gibson Company began operation in the town of Kalamazoo before relocating to Nashville. Gibson produced a budget range of instruments known as ‘Kalamazoos’.

Max in full voice, TuTus, Nov 2018

We then kicked on with other favourites including: “He’ll Have to Go” – Jim Reeves,
“Oh Boy” – Buddy Holly, “Love Potion Number 9” – The Searchers, and
“Mac the Knife” – Bobby Darin.

We had a surprise visitor from Dublin, Ireland who’d come to one of Max’s sessions three years ago, and she’d come back to rekindle memories. We sang “Molly Malone” (also known as “Cockles and Mussels”) largely in her honour.

It was a good way to finish 2018. TUTUS doesn’t start up again after Christmas until 19 February 2019.

I’d like to take the opportunity to wish all BUMS members a safe and happy New Year.
