BUM member, Jim Bills, invited performing BUMS to warm their voices and tighten their strings and join the Brisbane Basket Brigade to provide entertainment for the army of volunteers needed to pack and deliver Christmas baskets to those who need them. A big thank you to Mick Angeles, Bec Hull, Daylight Moon, Duke Nukem, The CAGE, and Vic Kena who answered the call.

The Brisbane Basket Brigade is an annual campaign to provide food and gifts for people that need a hand during the Christmas season. To date, hundreds of teams of volunteers feed more than 2 million people in 400 cities, across 74 countries annually. Since 1995, the Basket Brigades of the Magic Moments Foundation have worked with volunteer organisations to deliver food, clothing, toys to families in need, the elderly, the hungry and the homeless. The Baskets are given anonymously. The note they receive asks them to take care of themselves, and encourages them to ‘pay it forward’ one day if they find themselves in a position to help another.

The 2016 Brisbane Basket Brigade Packing Day was a huge success. Volunteers packed and delivered  over 750 Food & Gift Baskets for over 2700 recipients, 80 Homeless Food & Gift Bags and 16 Elderly Gift Baskets.  Over the weekend about 500 volunteers worked tirelessly to set up the hall, move around 15 tonnes of food, wrap over 3000 Christmas gifts, pack and deliver around 1800 boxes, and deliver them from Caboolture to Ipswich to Stradbroke Island.

The Pine Rivers Show is a great family day out. Apart from the fabulous musical entertainment, the show had heaps of fun carnival rides and games, and carnival rides like a ferris wheel, spinning tea cups, a base zero climbing wall and the exhilarating Claw for eager daredevils. The show grounds are located at the Pine Rivers Showgrounds at Lawnton.

The Muster Ukes return to the 2015 Gympie Music Muster to share the joy of making ukulele music with Muster patrons of all ages and musical ability.

The Muster Ukes is a group of musicians drawn from members of the Brisbane Ukulele Musicians Society (BUMS). The group has conducted free ukulele workshops at festivals around Australia – including the Woodford Folk Festival and the past two Gympie Music Musters.

In 2013 The Muster Ukes held the first ever musical instrument workshops at the Gympie Music Muster and taught over 30 enthusiastic ukulele players. The highlight was the opportunity to appear on the main stage on the Sunday afternoon to perform for the crowd. It was a buzz! In 2014 they returned to build on that success and in 2015 they are aiming for at least 50 uke players to join them on stage!

The uke workshops will be held at “The Workshop” stage for an hour each day. Participants will learn simple two-chord songs and strumming patterns and progress through to more complex numbers. It’s easy and a heap of fun playing and singing songs that everybody knows both modern and traditional.
Each workshop session will include time learning our performance piece for this year.

The workshops are free and The Muster Ukes welcome uke players of all ages and experience from rank beginner to virtuoso. Bring your uke (or you can buy one at the workshop), bring a friend, and bring your strumming fingers and your singing voice – The more the merrier!
