Good food and good fun at Northside

The Geebung Bowls Club was packed on a chilly Wednesday 25 June for the Northside jam.  The Little Nyonya Kitchen was doing a roaring trade for jammers and the public.

There were three acts as usual, kicking off with John Low’s new collaboration ‘Wheels’ – so named because ‘they’ve been around’.  Supported by Chris and Joan, they cranked out some old favourites like Proud Mary and Hotel California while surprising us with a quirky Jimmy Buffet number called ‘A Pirate Looks at Forty’.  It was a special night for Joan – her birthday – and we all sang Happy Birthday to her.

May, who is a budding ukulele player, came along for a meal with her family and was amazed to find a full-blown ukulele jam in action.  With the help of Lorraine, she joined in with some of the songs.  We hope she comes back.

Strung Out – one of Linda Gough’s bands – put on a spectacular performance. There were straightforward songs like Knock Three Times, I Only Wanna Be With You, and Save the Last Dance for Me and more challenging songs like Fleetwood Mac’s Gypsy.  They are a really tight band and had everyone singing along.  A still image doesn’t do justice to Margart Zordan’s drumming as she throws her whole body and soul into the rhythm.

Andrew and Peter finished off the night ably supported on bass by Kevin Buckley.  There were some old favourites like Fire and Rain and Take It Easy and they finished off with a couple of Irish songs I’ll Tell Me Ma and Sally Maclennane.

Next opportunity to join all this good food and fun at the Northside jam is 23 July.
