Changes in venues we use

News on venues used by BUMS

BUMS has learnt that we may soon be unable to run jams at two of our long-standing venues – Coorparoo Bowls Club and Ferny Grove Sports Club.

Ferny Grove Sports Club has been taken over by another entity, and the building will be refurbished. The function room we have used for over 10 years will be turned into a gaming room.  We will need a new venue probably by the middle of the year.

News has leaked out that Bowls Queensland plans to put the Coorparoo Bowls Club up for sale.  This decision has been on the cards for some time and is no real surprise.  We don’t know if or when the club will close.

Joe Kelly (the local member for Greenslopes) and other supporters of Coorparoo Bowls Club will be meeting at the club on Sunday 15 February at 4.00pm to express their views on this decision. BUMS has been using the bowls club for over 15 years for jams, workshops, cabarets, our AGMs and most recently, World Ukulele Day celebrations.  Representatives from the BUMS Management Committee will be attending this meeting, and BUMS members are welcome to come along too.

Max Borchardt, the Coorparoo jam coordinator, was interviewed giving his support to the Bowls Club.  You can see his statement here.

The future

BUMS Management Committee has been aware of these changes for some months.  We see this as an opportunity to improve the quality of the venues we use for our events.  By this we mean modern, clean and attractive venues with easy parking, accessible to everyone, and with aircon/heating.  We have created a checklist of essential and desirable features and have started looking at potential sites.

You can help

Look at our checklist. Do you know of venues that could suit our requirements?  We may not be able to get everything we want, but we’d welcome suggestions from you.  Send your ideas to secretary@brisbaneukulele.com and include your phone number so we can easily contact you.

This promises to be an exciting time for BUMS.  These changes give us opportunities to ‘do things differently’ and significantly improve the ‘service to you, our members’.
