Play Music on the Porch Day — Saturday 31 August 2019 — is an international day of music.

Participation is easy. Just gather friends, go outside and play music together. (You don’t really need a porch.) Share a video on your favourite social media with #playmusicontheporchday.

Last year, The CAGE did it. This year The CAGE are inviting all BUMS members to join them. And their ‘porch’ is Captain Burke Park, under the Story Bridge at Kangaroo Point. Bring your uke, a chair, and a picnic lunch, and arrive 10:30 am.

If you’re concerned about parking, catch a ferry to the Holman Street Ferry Terminal. You can plan your journey at Translink.

More details will be available closer to the event, or you can email The CAGE band leader, Ian Phillips phlipper37@hotmail.com.

Join the BUMS for our biggest jam of the month.

Grab your uke and bring your friends and have a fun night. Our set-leaders for July are Peter Grace, Coady Brule and Max Borchardt. Songs range from simple chords for beginners (and to limber up!) to more challenging chords and strumming for the more experienced.

Beginners and new players come for the introductory class at 6:30 pm before the Big Jam starts. You’ll learn some jam survival tips and useful chords. Please arrive early to tune up.

“I’m all about that bass” workshop has been designed exclusively for BUMS who play bass.

Accomplished Brisbane musician Mark Cryle, took a poll of his fellow musos to discover what abilities make a good bass player. He has extracted and distilled this into a workshop which will enable you to get better at playing bass on your own and with others.

The workshop will focus on bass as an ensemble instrument and will be divided into 3 sections.

  1. Bass as a rhythm instrument: understanding the fundamentals of time keeping.
  2. “No one knows the chord until the bass player decides which note to play!”: understanding the concept of the “root note” ; knowing when to play it and when not to.
  3. What to play between the “root notes”: understanding the importance of scales and harmony theory in deciding which notes to play and not to play.

When it comes to improving your bass playing faster, nothing beats than actually getting out and playing with other musicians.

To get the most out of this workshop participants need have the fundamentals of playing bass, and know notes of the bass fret board and be comfortable playing. This is NOT a beginners workshop.

ABOUT YOUR PRESENTER

Mark Cryle began playing bass at age 14 in high school bands. In the intervening years he has played on international and Australian festival stages, in concert halls and theatres, recording studios, clubs, pubs, churches, markets on the backs of trucks and once in a cemetery. As well as being an experienced and accomplished bass player, Mark also plays mandolin and guitar and is a highly-acclaimed songwriter.

Get tickets in this bright RED Flight TUS35 travel soprano with a black soft case (RRP $80), and matching BUMS pom-pom hat and scarf set crafted by our very own Amanda Allwood (Hypnotonics).

Plastic Fantastic! Built unapologetically from plastic, the sound quality of these ukuleles will blow you away, and their durability will make them Keith Richards’ instrument of choice after Armageddon hits. These ukes are perfect for rainy festivals, cramped overhead lockers, snowy adventures and summer swims.

Thanks to a wider arched ABS back, this baby has more volume in middle range than your average soprano, while also resonating better and sounding brighter. It is needless to mention the durability and resistance to humidity changes, the main enemies of the wooden ukuleles.

You’ll be the envy of all your friends as you strum up a storm on your Flight soprano travel uke, while keeping warm and toasty in your brilliant BUMS beanie and scarf!

Tickets $2 ea or 3 for $5 are available at major jams (Coorparoo, Ferny Grove, Northside and Toowong).

The raffle will be drawn at the Coorparoo Big Uke Jam on Wednesday 7 August 2019.

Thank you to our long-term supporters, Music Express Mt Gravatt, for contributing to the prize!
